What green burial means at Ascend
Green burial returns a body to the earth as simply as possible, so it can become part of the land. At Ascend, that means:
- Embalming is not required. If it is ever needed, only a nontoxic product approved by the Green Burial Council may be used.
- No concrete vaults or grave liners.
- A shroud or a simple casket made of wood, wicker, cardboard or other natural material.
- An optional flat marker of natural stone, or no marker at all. Every grave is located by GPS.
- Families may help close the grave, with our staff alongside them.

Our land
Managed first as a natural restoration site
Our Rules put it plainly: Ascend is managed first as a natural restoration site and second as a place of burial. Graves will slowly blend into native grasses, wildflowers and, in time, young trees. You will not find mowed lawn, plastic flowers or rows of headstones here.
Woodland is the natural habitat of Carroll County, and that is where this land is headed. Over the coming years we will mow, seed, plant native trees and, when it is safe, use prescribed fire. Some seasons the land will look rough. That is part of how a natural landscape comes back.
